Telehealth Adoption in Rural Areas: Barriers and Enablers from a Mixed-Methods Perspective

Abstract

The adoption of telehealth in rural areas is examined in this study. Both facilitators and impediments influence adoption rate. Particularly in underprivileged rural communities, telehealth services are becoming significant in reducing healthcare gaps. Such obstacles prevent them from taking full advantage of digital technologies. However, the goal is to identify the various elements affecting the adoption of telemedicine. It investigates adoption’s social and technological facets. For instance, it is essential to comprehend these elements to create solutions that will increase access to care. The study used a mixed-approaches methodology by using qualitative information from interviews with quantitative survey data.

Data from surveys is analyzed in the study’s quantitative component. Participants include medical professionals and patients in rural areas. Moreover, it consists of perceptions of the efficacy of telemedicine, digital literacy levels, and internet accessibility. This information sheds light on the adoption rate of e-health. It highlights important adoption hurdles. Among these obstacles is a bland broadband infrastructure. In addition, the study also takes adoption facilitators of telemedicine into account. For example, government assistance programs, community engagement efforts, and healthcare policies play in advancing digital health services.

Comprehensive interviews are part of the qualitative component. Rural healthcare experts are among the participants. Researchers also take interviews with policymakers and patients. These interviews offer more profound comprehension. Therefore, researchers investigate elements influencing the uptake of telemedicine and cultural perspectives. Finally, the goal of these suggestions is to remove obstacles. They will increase rural communities’ acceptance of telemedicine. As a result, access to healthcare is made more equitable. Additionally, it will result in better patient outcomes. For rural healthcare, telehealth usage must rise.
